The French trotter: presentation, breeding and selection

Around 15,000 producing mares are covered every year for an approximate 13,000 births, 10,000 of which will be registered. The first administrative condition to allow a horse to compete is that it should be registered in the French Trotter stud-book. Then comes a qualification test, generally when the horse is 2 or 3 years old, where the horse will have to run a pre-determined distance at an imposed minimum speed. Then, 15,000 trotters, all ages included (2 to 10 years old), compete on the 234 French racetracks…
