89th Prix d’Amérique: an outstanding event. The 2nd start was the good one. Meaulnes du Corta, Quaker Jet and Nouba du Saptel started off very well, same for Oasis Gédé. However, it was soon over for Orlando Sport who was the first disqualified horse.

As the competitors pass the stands, Yves Dreux on  Nouba du Saptel’s sulky takes the lead and positions himself at the fence, followed by Meaulnes du Corta and Olga du Biwetz – Ghiaccio del Nord and Rolling d’Héripré come next.
In Joinville bend, Olga du Biwetz briefly takes the lead but is immediately taken over by Meaulnes du Corta. Rolling d’Héripré tries hard to remain in the leading pack, but this will do him no good for it owes him to be at the outside – all of a sudden, the spectators are struck numb as favorite of the race Ready Cash goes into gallop and is put out of the race.

1,200m from the finish, it is now Paris Haufor who goes on the attack at the outside. The racehorses go for the slope, then comes the crossing of racetracks and the leaders, i.e. Meaulnes du Corta, Olga du Biwetz and Rolling d’Héripré still keep their rivals at bay. As the competitors are going for the last bend, Paris Haufor finds himself in a difficult position as always for him at this moment of the race, same goes for Quarla who then gets stuck at the outside.
Also at the outside Russel November accelerates and seems likely to maintain his efforts – at the end of the last bend: Quaker Jet, in the middle of the racetrack, never far from the head of the race, manages to drag himself from the leading pack – Meaulnes du Corta accelerates and immediately forces Rolling d’Héripré to flirt with disqualification as he tries to keep up with the former.

Half way through the straightline, we have every reason to think that it is going to be a 4th Prix d’Amérique in a row for trainer Pierre Levesque, but Quaker Jet is increasingly present – and then at the outside, it is a pink jersey which literally swoops down his rivals. Oyonnax, who has been following Quaker Jet since the bottom of the slope, ends the race in a flash and edges out the other competitors at the post and outstandingly wins 2010 Prix d’Amérique.

Oyonnax with 173/1 odds, Quaker Jet with 108/1. Indeed we had not seen such odds at the finish post of a Prix d’Amérique for a long time, and I believe it last happened in 1979 when High Echelon won with odds close to 90/1, ahead of Ideal du Gazeau and Fakir du Vivier.

However, for us who saw the race from one of the panoramic restaurants of Vincennes racetrack, it was an extraordinary event, and the 40,000 spectators attending that day got their money’s worth with the other major events of the day and winners like Rombaldi in Camille Blaisot Prix.

Of course we regret that 5 year-old Ready Cash and Rolling d’Héripré could not make it to the finish, but the most perceptive of you realize how hard it is for young trotters to rival and defeat their elders in so selective and strenuous an event.

Looking at the time records, it comes to mind that it is the 3rd fastest record of all Prix d ’Amérique history – it is to be noted that Meaulnes du Corta ran at the same speed as in 2009, and that courageous Nouba du Saptel improved her record by one 10th second. We also wish to bring to your attention that we were among the first websites which released the Prix d’Amérique results live, only a few seconds after the finish. Let’s give it for 2010 Prix d’Amérique, and look forward to 2011 Prix d’Amérique!

In less than 100 days it will be the 31st of January and there will come the long-awaited 89th Prix d’Amerique 2010. It is the greatest harness racing event in the world, considered by all as the trotters world championship, with one million euros stakes.

The finest French trotters along with the very best European trotters will be competing. It will be the opportunity for us to see great horses such as Nouba du Saptel (photo below), Niky, Olga du Biwetz, One du Rib and the like. 2007 and 2008 winner Offshore Dream and Qualita Bourbon who have retired will not be there. 2009 outstanding winner Meaulnes du Corta, who has been kept away from the racetrack these last 6 months due to recurrent leg problems, may not attend. Great champions go, others will come and we will probably see Maharajah, Stefan Ultman’s crack who just walked away with the great Prix de l’U.E.T. Final on October 3.

The richest horses (Oiseau de Feux, Magnificent Rodney, One du Rib…) are already selected participants for the supreme event, providing of course that they avoid wounds or detrimental diseases till then. As for the others they will have to prove themselves worthy of the great event so to speak in taking part in a 4-step qualifying tournament: The Prix de Bretagne – the Prix du Bourbonnais – the Prix de Bourgogne and finally the Prix de Belgique. The first 4 horses in the final ranking, once these 4 preliminary events have been run, will have priority to compete in the Prix d’Amérique. In each of the 4 events the horses will score as follows: 1st position, 9 points – 2nd position, 6 points – 3rd position, 4 points – 4th position, 2 points – 5th position, 1 point. For horses aged 4 there will be another opportunity at the end of December. The winner of the Criterium Continental will receive a wild-card which will allow the horse to compete in the great event of Harness racing. It will not be easy though because the horse will meet older and more resistant competitors.

Horses aged 6 will have an extra opportunity to qualify directly if they win the Prix Ténor de Baune, regardless of their earnings. This event was introduced in 2008 with the specific aim to reward trotters this age in their top shape 2 weeks before the great event. Until the 31th of January a lot can happen, a horse can suddenly earn a lot, others may unfortunately be wounded or go through a period of rather poor physical condition. These are what makes the suspense and the magic of horseraces. Buy a share in a race horse: a good idea, why?

Prix de Belgique – Group II – International Event. Total earnings: €110,000 euros. – Harness Racing. – 2,850 m, long track. Distribution of earnings: 1st : € 55,000 – 2nd: € 27,500 – 3rd: € 14,300 – 4th: € 6,600 – 5th: € 3,300 – 6th: € 2,200 – 7th : € 1,100. For horses aged 4 to 10 included, except geldings, with a minimum € 160,000. with a 25m handicap for racehorses that have gathered €1,125,000 life earnings. Were only allowed drivers who have won 35 races among which 10 harness racings starts.

Priority to Prix de Belgique was given to the Prix de Bourgogne, Prix de Bretagne and Prix du Bourbonnais winners. The Prix de Belgique is a qualifying race to 2010 Prix d’Amérique (see qualification criteria for the race).

The Prix de Belgique was for Christian Bigeon the last opportunity to see his horse Paris Haufor (see photo) run the Prix d’Amérique in 15 days. As a matter of fact, Vivier de Montfort’s son needed to score in this last qualifying race so as to finish among the first 4 in the ranking by points. It is now done.

Now, about the event itself, Italian trotter Ghiaccio Del Nord darts off and takes the lead, slightly ahead of Quarla and Oasis Gédé at the fence – as for Paris Haufor he starts cautiously but better than in his usual manner and his driver quickly leads him towards the leading pack.

As he passes by the stands, Paris Haufor outdoes himself and takes the lead ahead of Quarla and keeps it till the end. Despite the intense pace as the horses are reaching the Joinville bend, Christian Bigeon’s champion manages to widen the gap with the rest of the leading pack, with Quarla and Ghiaccio Del Nord still ahead of it – Meaulnes du Corta, after his fine start with a 25m handicap, stands at a 7th or 8th position in the leading pack – Up the slope, nothing much worth mentioning, which allows Paris Haufor to keep his comfortable leading position.

He thus sets out for the final bend in first position and one can reasonably expect that he will make it to the finish as winner. Behind, Oasis Gédé with Meaulnes du Corta in her trail increases her effort and will obviously make it difficult for the others to take the 2nd position. In the straightway, there is in fact no suspense and no surprise – Paris Haufor crosses the finish line hands down after a superb race.

Oasis Gédé has done very well indeed till the end and takes the 2nd position ahead of Ghiaccio del Nord, Quarla and Orlando Sport. Christian Bigeon’s darling trotted the last 500 m at a 1′10 », this explains why the leading pack did not manage to catch up with him towards the end of the race.

In the Prix Tenor de Baune, for racehorses aged 6 and whose winner is granted access to compete in the Prix d’Amérique, Qwerty finished first. He took the lead in the plain, but then was overtaken by Quarcio du Chêne who was very quick in the slope. As they were coming out of the last bend, confident Pierre Levesque galvanized Qwerty to eventually catch up with his rival easily and won the race nicely.

Invest in a French Trotter in France!

Priority to Prix de Bourgogne was given to the Prix de Bretagne and Prix du Bourbonnais winners. The Prix de Bourgogne is a qualifying race to 2010 Prix d’Amérique (see qualification criteria for the race). See also: 2010 Prix de Belgique.

Première Steed darts off at the beginning of the race and takes the leads with Meaulnes du Corta in her trail and Olga du Biwetz on her outside. The same does not go for Russel November, Paris Haufor and Nouba du Saptel who stands last, but the latter will soon make the necessary effort to join them in the lead. At the bottom of the slope, Olga du Biwetz takes the lead ahead of Première Steed and Meaulnes du Corta at the fence is a bit stuck between Fabrice Souloy’s 2 horses – Nouba du Saptel is 4th, next to Meaulnes du Corta, Infinitif soon catches up with them.

A little 1,000 m from the finish, the horses speed up and Orlando Sport takes the opportunity to go for it at the outside. At the track cross, his driver pushes him in an attempt to overtake the leader. In the final bend Olga du Biwetz and Orlando Sport are neck in neck – Infinitif gets into gallop and Meaulnes du Corta does all he can to take the lead.

As they are going for the straightway, Pierre Levesque can at last spur Voici du Niel’s son after Olga du Biwetz into victory, but it is already too late and despite an outstanding end of race 2009 Prix d’Amérique winner will be beaten to the final win by his rival. Then comes Première Steed at the fence who finishes 3^rd, ahead of Nouba du Saptel and Paradis Cordière.

What to say 3 weeks away from 2010 Prix d’Amérique? Olga du Biwetz confirms her worth in the Prix du Bourbonnais but she would certainly have been defeated by Meaulnes du Corta if he could have had the best of conditions at the beginning of the race – Nouba du Saptel is steadily making her way and has found where she belongs. The looser of the day might be Paris Haufor who finished 9th. Indeed, in the ranking by point set up after the first 3 qualifying events, it takes the 7^th position scoring 4 points. For the moment he is denied access to the « grand final», at the end of January. The conditions to his taking 2010 Prix d’Amérique will be to finish 2^nd at least in the Prix de Belgique which is the final qualifying event for horses selected by earnings. This event will take place on 17 January.

Invest in a French Trotter!

After the Prix de Bretagne won by Orlando Sport ahead of Quarla, today’s event was the second preliminary event to 2010 Prix d’Amérique. After 150 m, Oyonnax takes the lead along with favourite Quarla at his outside. Première Steed and Swedish trotter Glen Kronos immediately follow in their trail.

As for Paris Haufor and Christian Bigeon they have no choice but to go to the outside. As the racehorses pass by the stands, 2009 Prix d’Amérique winner Meaulnes du Corta brings up the rear. Further up, Paris Haufor’s fruitful effort takes him up into the leading pack. Down the slope, Quarla dethrones Oyonnax and thus takes the lead ahead of Première Steed and Glen Kronos.

The competitors seem to be watching one another as they gently trot at a 1’15’’/km before going for the slope with Quarla still in the lead. Before passing by the little wood, Paris Haufor unconvincingly speeds up at the outside.

500 m away from the finish, Quarla leads a decidedly quiet pack. – Oyonnax seems to be going very easily, Orlando Sport comes closer very fast and Olga du Biwetz closes in too, as a fault puts Niky and Glen Kronos out of the race.

As the horses head for the straightway, despite the long awaited intensification of attacks, Quarla valiantly fights for her position – Orlando Sport makes an attempt to keep up with her, but it is Oyonnax who will resolutely go for the first position and fight for victory till the very end. At the finish, Franck Nivard’s darling horse beats by an inch Oyonnax who does pretty well toward the end of the race. Further behind, Paris Haufor takes the 3rd position ahead of Olga du Biwetz and Infinitif (Infinitif will be disqualified after verification).

What conclusions can we draw from this second preliminary event to the Prix d’Amérique? Well, Quarla confirms her worth in the Prix de Bretagne, the same goes for Orlando Sport whose trainer Roger Coueffin made it more or less understood that his racehorse would only be pushed into effort in the last 500 m. As a matter of fact, Orlando Sport is already prepared enough 45 days before the end of January’s major event.

Roger Coueffin is extremely careful not to use up his horse and wishes to keep him in good form in order to gently increase the pressure by the time the big day comes. I personally think that Olga du Biwetz who took the start with a 25m handicap did a much better performance than in the Prix de Bretagne. She equaled the record on this event: 1’13’’3 by Mara Bourbon in 2005.

Meaulnes du Corta, who also had a 25m handicap, finished the race at a 1’13’’9/km, which is what 3rd position Paris Haufor achieved. Ranking by points: The Prix de Bretagne, du Bourbonnais, de Belgique and de Bourgogne, called the 4 « Bs », are preliminary events to the Prix d’Amérique. They provide a means of selection of horses who are to compete in the Prix d’Amérique. The scale is as follows: the racehorse who finishes first in each event scores 9 points, the second scores 6 points, the 3rd horse 4 points, the 4th 2 points, and the racehorse who finishes 5th scores 1 point. At the end of the 4 « Bs », the first 4 horses in the ranking by points are automatically granted access to competing in the Prix d’Amérique. After winning the Prix du Bourbonnais, QUARLA (photo) is in first place with a total 15 points. ORLANDO SPORT, who won the Prix de Bretagne, is in second position with 9 points, that is 3 points more than OYONNAX and OLGA DU BIWETZ, who are still in for qualification for the moment. Then come PARIS HAUFOR (4 points), PRODIGIOUS (2 points), ONE DU RIB and PREMIERE STEED, with 1 point each.

Events coming up soon: Prix de Bourgogne on Sunday 3 January, and Prix de Belgique on Sunday 17 January. Let us not stop there without mentioning what happened a little before the race started: Jos Verbeeck underwent a loss of consciousness after he was ejected from his sulky as his horse Perlando got panic-stricken and reared. He was more shaken than hurt but still, Jos Verbeeck was put under observation by Vincennes Racetrack medical team.

Invest in a French Racehorse!

As you know, France welcomes the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Prix d’Amérique which are 2 major horseracing events on the international scale. These events are far from being 15 minutes’ fame. They are in some way representative of horse races in our country, all disciplines included. French horseracing is going quite well and all the people involved in the horseracing sector have every reason to be glad about it.

The fact that France has managed to maintain the organisation and above all the financing of these events so far has nothing to do with chance nor luck, and this is not the case for most of the other European countries.

After long fighting bookmakers and finally getting rid of them, we now have to do with online betting competition. The best defense is attack, so PMU (Official Betting Organisation, where people can bet from other registered places than racetracks) has opened a website to compete directly with current online betting games. Another big step is a significantly increased schedule of events along with more races throughout 2010. As of next year, there will be 73 extra races. Special care will be put into developing the international aspect of events with, for example, events in Avenches, Switzerland, and Mons, Belgium. These events will take place mainly on Tuesdays and Fridays between the end of the races of the day and the beginning of the evening fixtures.

There is going to be a lot of work for betters too almost each day of the week: on Sundays, between 11am and 1h30pm, events will take place in numerous towns of the country – on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 12 to 8pm, the races that already exist in the PMH calendar (people bet at the racetrack at the start of the race only) will come under PMU system.

Though this website was already well designed, it now offers even more information and new topics. Under the ‘Events’ section, at least 20 sub-sections will allow you to: find a horse registered to take the start in an event – know the temporary then official results – watch the races of today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow – sort the events by date, by racetrack – know everything about qualifying races – access various statistics (horses, owners, trainers, jockeys) and more… A section specially dedicated to ads allows you to find ads about the purchasing and the selling of «French Trotters» horses. You will find a full list of race horses for sale and will make the perfect purchase!

The Society for French Racehorses Support gives full evidence that it is a modern, striving and proactive institution which has got what it takes to stay in the lead on the European scale.

Invest in a French race horse !

The countdown has now officially started. The Prix de Bretagne which took place on Saturday 21 November opened the series of preliminary and qualifying events to 2010 Prix d’Amérique scheduled 31 January. After a first false start, Quarla at the outside and Première Steed at the fence are the best placed contestants – One du Rib, Oyonnax, Olga du Biwetz are also in the leading pack. As they pass by the stands, Meaulnes du Corta brings up the rear along with Nana du Las Végas, Malakite and Orlando Sport. In with the front runners, One du Rib takes the lead and Oyonnax, with Niky in his trail, catches up.

In Joinville loop, Olga du Biwetz comes close to the leader and Quarla, at the outside, soon catches up with her. Up the slope, the horses in the leading pack keep their positions – it is to be noted however that Qualmio de Vandel comes nearer the lead, so does Orlando Sport who leaves his back rank position and who is himself joined by Thierry Duvaldestin’s horse.

At the crossing of tracks, Orlando Sport keeps up his efforts and catches up with Quarla still in the lead – in Orlando Sport’s trail Perlando tries to keep up with him. The horses enter the final loop. Première Steed is very close – Nana du Las Végas and Prodigious come closer – One du Rib is beginning to waver as Orlando Sport takes a new start and manages to deepen the gap along with Quarla. Our 2 contestants take the lead as they enter the straightway, 2 lengths ahead of Olga du Biwetz and Perlando - 150m before the finish, Orlando Sport, stimulated by outstanding Sébastien Baude, manages to get away from incredibly courageous Quarla and wins the race with superb style. Prodigious, who was behind, ends the race hurtling off and finishes 4th ahead of One du Rib and Nouba du Saptel who finishes extremely well considering that she has been confined to the fence till half way through the straightway.

What are the conclusions to be drawn from this preliminary event ? Well, we are happy to say that Orlando Sport beautifully proved that he was in constant progress. It is his 2nd win after the Prix des Cévennes last 28 October. He is thus already considered a reliable contestant for the final win in the great event we are expecting end of January.

Quarla, who went unlucky in the Criterium for horses aged 4, showed that she has got what it takes for tremendous progress.

Olga du Biwetz, who had had 3 wins in a row, did not run at her best, so said her driver – ‘All things considered I was disappointed and she didn’t seem to have the makings of today’s winner’.

Nouba du Saptel made a strong impression when she tore herself from the fence, but it is always slightly annoying having to wait till the last minute as it seems to be the case with her.

Prodigious admirably finished the race but I now have the feeling that he reaches his limit when he is confronted to older and more experienced horses.

I couldn’t conclude without mentioning 2009 Prix d’Amérique winner, Meaulnes du Corta, who ran for the first time after 8 months at rest. We will certainly have to wait for a few weeks to know more but Pierre Levesque, his trainer, didn’t sound much optimistic in his after race interview.

The American Harness Racing great day. That Saturday, a generous 10 events’ program took place on Meadowlands Racetrack, the temple of American harness racing, that is the equivalent to our national Hippodrome de Vincennes (Vincennes Racetrack).

Among these 10 races were 4 major events, the most prestigious being the legendary Hambletonian. Considered as the greatest event in the world for trotters aged 3 it was named after great sire Hambletonian 10. Born on 5 May 1849, he passed away in 1876. Although he never competed in a race he sired over 1,300 foals and fillies in 24 mating seasons. 99% of all American trotters trace up their bloodline to him.

Some of the horses who won the Hambletonian have become a legend in Harness Racing: Nevele Pride, Mack Lobell, recently Donato Hanover as well as Swedish Scarlet Knight, the only European trotter to have won it so far.

But let’s get back to 2009 84th Hambletonian: The winner was top favourite Muscle Hill (see photo opposite), driven by Brian Sears. Muscles Yankee’s son was in the lead throughout the race and shot off in the home stretch, with a 1′08  »5 record. All the time in the winner’s trail Explosive Matter arrived in 2nd position. Calchips Brute finished 3rd.

- Hambletonian Oaks (9th race), for mares aged 3: the winner was Broadway Schooner also driven by Brian Sears. She was neck-in-neck with Raising Rachel and favourite Elusive Desire. Video of the event:

- Nat Ray (7th race) is an international event for horses aged 3 and over, and is also a qualifying event to the Harness Racing World Cup. Lucky Jim won it hands down. In the first half of the racetrack he remained in the pack. Glen Kronos, trained by Lutfi Kolgjini, was in the lead all this time. Lucky Jim then took the lead and largely defeated his competitors, particularly Swedish Glen Kronos, as he shot off in the home stretch. As for Gift Kronos, he finished 3rd. View the race:

- The programme also featured two fine events for horses aged 2. Outsider Poof She’s Gone won the Merrie Annabelle Trot for fillies (2nd race). View the video:

- In Peter Haughton Memorial for males (3rd race), Holiday Road outdid the other horses by his speed. He took the lead halfway through the home stretch and beat the record for this event at a 1′10 »9. Pilgrims Taj and Lucky Chucky respectively finished 2nd and 3rd. View the video:

It is true that in some respect American harness racing slightly differs from the approach to trot that people have in Europe and more particularly in France, but it is nonetheless good fun. The events almost always take place on a circular racetrack with mobile start and few participants. The most famous distance is the mile, i.e. 1,609 m. Minimum speed is 1′10 » to the km. There are also a few star jockeys namely (randomly) John Campbell, Brian Sears, Ron Pierce, Tim Tetrick…and others.

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe truely is a legendary event. Every horse owner, breeder, trainer or jockey dreams of winning it once in their life. Only the Epsom Derby in the UK can possibly keep up with it when it comes down to prestige. Even great events such as the Breeder’s Cup, the Japan Cup or Hong- Kong major events do not have the same appeal and glamour.

The horses must compete on a highly selective and distinctive racetrack. The horse that wins this 2,400 m race undoubtedly is a great champion. This year the favourites are Youmzain, Vision d’Etat as well as poor Dar Re Mi for horses aged 4 and over, Sea The Stars and Fame And Glory for horses aged 3. After Tuesday’s withdrawal, there were 24 horses left in the competition.

They will probably be 15 or 16 at the starting line. As for Youmzain he will attend for the 3rd year in a row. A horse with consistent results, he went unlucky in 2007, and last year he was defeated only by out of this world Zarkava. His trainer, Mick Channon (former professional football player in Southampton, Manchester City – English international, 46 games, 21 scores), says he is in his top shape at the moment and really hopes to see him win. Youmzain earned over £1,000,000 in 2008 so whatever happens on Sunday will be true delight.

Le Retour and My Winner on the outside shot off, but it was certainly adequate in this speed race disputed on the unusual 1,609 m distance. Both horses had to overtake favorite Popinée de Timbia and Nuage de Lait before crossing the line . A little behind were Punch de Chenu, Lou de Fontaine and Quinta des Lucas. In the first bend, Laurent-Claude Abrivard kept his horse in the lead, as Popinée de Timbia slightly got to the outside.

Up the slope, the first 4 horses widened the gap with the rest of the competitors as they reached for the last bend. At the 500 m sign, My Winner, still in the lead and on the fence, defeated Popinée de Timbia who stayed at the outside unable to catch up. Le Retour was 3rd ahead of Nuage de Lait and Punch de Chenu. Going into the straightway, Punch de Chenu made an attempt to the outside, but My Winner stood fast.150 m away from the winning post, My Winner decisively widened the gap with his immediate competitors and definitely headed for the win.
